“Good Night. Sleep Tight. Don’t Let the Bed Bugs Bite”
from the 1896 English Children’s Nursery Rhyme
Recent articles throughout the country point to a very disturbing trend of Bed Bug Infestations. These articles went as far as ranking the worst cities in America for the ‘free-loading” pests. Sadly, our Nation’s Capital, Washington, D.C., walked away with 1st place. Rest assured several articles also mention efforts throughout Illinois to address this rapidly expanding condition.
As we all knew that Washington, D.C., was overflowing with many vermin and pests. So, it was not too alarming to hear of Bed Bugs now permeating every corner of our nation’s political realm.
This so-called epidemic of Bed Bugs, just like politicians, knows no boundaries. Also Bed Bugs, unlike politicians, have no social economic preference to households or persons. That is inclusive of Business’s, Factories, Hospitals and Nursing Homes, plus Colleges. Did you see the article of an irate customer actually lacing a big box retail store with hundreds of bed bugs? Turn on your creep alert!
Bed Bugs are searching continually for their number one source of food. A human host! They actually feed on your blood. Again Bed Bugs are not known to spread diseases among humans, just the thought of Bed Bugs feasting nightly on their human hosts is simply disgusting. For further insight check out WebMD’s article on Bed Bugs.
Many think that Bed Bugs are due to unsanitary conditions. While partly true, the reality is that Bed Bugs like anywhere they can find a host. And, they will wait patiently for some time to ‘hitch a ride’ wherever they can. The transmission of Bed Bugs travels the same paths as our clothes, pets, belongings, travels and lodgings. Where they go, the Bed Bugs follow.
Additionally, their eggs can lay dormant for many months at the right temperature until they begin their infestation. Each Bed Bug lays one egg a day on average. Which takes 8-10 days to hatch depending on the surroundings and temperature. Then it takes five to six weeks to become an adult and the process of laying an egg a day starts all over. So, once identified, action is of the essence to avoid a total infestation. Please note that our comments below in Bed Bug FAQs, that the longer they are allowed to multiply, the longer it takes to erradicate their habitat.
Our main Service Areas; Knox, Mason, Fulton and McDonough Counties, has given us an up close and personal view of the varied infestations. Bed Bug Infestations are significant and seem to be growing in all varied dwellings. View the Spoon River Pest Control Service Area Here
We are additionally seeing these Beg Bug Invasions in all price ranges of homes. Due to the nature of the pest, they will ‘hitch-hike’ into a home to find a human host anyway they can. So, regardless of your home being worth $500,000 or $50,000, Bed Bugs will target you. Do also take precautions when visiting public places where elbow room is limited. Bed Bugs love to hitch-a-ride on clothing.
Here are some quick tips courtesy of the University of Minnesota.
Quick facts on Bed Bugs
- Bed bugs feed on humans and animals and use their blood to grow and reproduce.
- Bed bugs do not transmit disease to people.
- Bed bugs live close to where people sleep, rest or sit for long periods of time.
- Bed bugs are active at night and generally hide during the day.
- Do not try to treat bed bugs yourself. Contact a pest control service for effective removal of bed bugs.
The Best Possible Advice the University of Minnesota listed was their final bullet. Do not try to treat Bed Bugs yourself. Time after time we see individuals that attempt such and only aggravate the problem and increase the level of infestation. The longer treatment is delayed, the larger the Bed Bug Colony will grow.

Christmas Tree Critters
Yule Tide Selection
Tis the time of year to bring forth the focal point of most home’s Christmas Décor, the Christmas Tree. The heritage that Christmas Trees bring to every family household dates back to as early as 1510 in Latvia. Just the memories of the Christmas Tree Lots or Farms conjure up precious memories for young and old. Just the smell of the a freshly cut Christmas Tree in a home conjures recollections from the past.
It has only been in recent decades that the debatable Artificial Christmas Trees first started making their debut. At the time, many shunned the purchase of “Fake Christmas Trees”. Over the years the popularity improved, as did the designs and overall looks. Some looked very real.
Agreed the enjoyable things about Artificial Trees are less clean up and far less concern for those pesky bugs or critters than can come inside with a freshly harvested live tree. Some are enthralled with the Tinsel Trees and Imitation Flocked Trees. But when all is said and done, the Live Christmas Tree embodies the spirit of the season possibly best.
25-30 Million Christmas Trees are purchased annually out of the over 300 million trees on tree farms throughout the United States. Truly a sensible, sustainable and ecological program.
Environmentally, nothing compares to the harvested live tree for providing habitat for local wildlife, not to mention the actual clean air filtration the Tree Farms supply. Central and West Central Illinois have several Christmas Tree Farms available for the family’s selection.

Christmas Tree purchasing actually will be quite easy and simple if the Tree Farm and Tree Lot is well established and considers the needs of its patrons. The recommended check list is not only for the protection of the family but also the safety of any coming into contact that might have allergies. Be sure to read our comments and others on Proper Christmas Tree Care.
As a short reminder, be prepared for the elements when venturing out to find that precious family Christmas Tree. It can be a bit chilly out on the farm in the country. Boots required?
Proper Christmas Tree Preparation
The first line of defense from bringing the chosen tree and its ‘critters’ into your humble abode is a good shaking. Normally most Tree Farms and Tree Lots do a last-minute shake by machine or by hand to rid the tree of excess needles and bugs. A good shaking normally will rid the tree of eggs from bugs and from bugs themselves. Seldom does the occasional squirrel hang around after a solid shaking. Although the “SQUIRREL Scene” in Christmas Vacation can occur, rest assured your odds are somewhere around 1 in 100,000 trees will provide such furry company.
Hopefully the final tree netting at the Tree Farm or lot and the ride home on top of the chosen method of transportation will also blow excess needles and unwanted bugs from the tree.
Upon arriving home, many experts suggest letting the tree rest in the garage overnight to acclimate the tree to its new surroundings. It also always for the extra free loaders to fall off and walk away. Remember, in most climates, you are taking a tree from cold conditions into a warm and toasty home. The perfect place for things to hatch or awaken.
Note that this is the time to also prepare the tree for the journey into your home.
- One more shake to rid final excess needles and bugs
- Cutting the trunk end of the tree for proper level and height & moisture allowance
- Trimming branches for shaping or allowing for tree skirt
- Attaching the Christmas Tree Base or Stand
- Wrapping the Christmas Tree in a Tree Blanket or Sheet for the journey inside
